Female preferences for a combination of looks and moves drive evolution of the physical and behavioral trait combinations observed in the birds-of-paradise. A team led by Cornell Lab of Ornithology postdoctoral researcher Russell Ligon examined almost 1,000 video clips and 200 audio clips from the Cornell lab’s Macaulay Library of natural history media, along with nearly 400 specimens from the American Museum of Natural History, to analyze the richness and diversity of the colors, dancing and sounds of breeding displays by male birds-of-paradise.
Their results suggest female birds-of-paradise evaluate multiple aspects of a male’s breeding display at once. The females don’t just consider how the male looks but also how well he sings and dances. Female preferences for certain combinations of these traits – such as electric-blue feathers displayed during a promenade around the forest floor, or elaborate plumes flared out during an excited bout of hopping and rapid-fire high-volume squawking – result in what the researchers call a “courtship phenotype,” or a bundle of physical and behavioral traits during breeding displays…

Among Birds-of-Paradise, Stunning Plumage Is Not Enough to Attract Mates
Birds-of-paradise are a family of small to medium-sized forest birds found in the New Guinea region. These birds are among the most beautiful creatures on Earth. Male birds-of-paradise are notorious for their extravagant feather ornaments, complex calls, and shape-shifting dance moves — all evolved to win a mate. According to a new study, preferences of female birds-of-paradise drive the evolution of physical and behavioral trait combinations that may also be tied to where the male does his courting — on the ground or up in the trees.

Iceland's turf houses are a weather-savvy architectural design. These little cottages keep out the cold brilliantly. The houses are made of a layer of flat stones to serve as the foundation, then typically have a wood frame over which squares of turf are piled.
The layers of turf make the house look like it is rising up from the ground, and the only exposed wood is the doorway. The doorways are often decorative and provide a bit of color and character to an otherwise camouflaged home. The superior insulation offered by the turf also helps the homes with energy efficiency as it takes little heat to make the interior toasty. Plus, unlike structures made of stone, wood or metal, there is hardly any way for warm air to leak out or cold air to leak in...
